Found in grasslands, near rivers and the sides of forest tracks, from sea level to mounainside

Dense evergreen tufts of narrow leaves with drooping or recurving tips

Damp places in the open

60cm-1m high

A tufted mound of red strap-like leaves, which continues, if reasonably protected, through the winter



Carex pendula

(Great drooping sedge)

Europe, Asia & N. America

Up to 2m high

Damp & shady areas

The dark green strap-like leaves, bearing in early summer drooping, cat's tail-like russet coloured flower spikes

Great for flower arranging

But especially useful in those dark areas of the garden, where little else may grow. Although, I have seen it thriving in a dry sunny garden in Devon

New Zealand

Up to 45cm

Moisture but with good drainage

Dense tufts of brick coloured foliage, which look great planted on mass

Self-seed quite happily in ideal conditions
